Are you the Next American Idol?
By L Baumgarten

Every year thousands of hopefuls travel for miles in the hope of receiving a golden ticket. Each one is willing to line up for hours - even in extreme weather conditions - just have their moment in front of a set of judges, who are not particularly known for their patience or compassion. Many leave their families, some risk their jobs. Everyone, however, risks ridicule at the hands of the judges and millions of Americans. All this for the slim chance of becoming the next American Idol.

American Idol has become a cultural phenomenon that has transcended being just another TV show. Millions of households across America tune in each week to watch these idol wanna-bees. We listen to their stories, analyze their voices, critique their wardrobe and laugh at those that are blissfully unaware of their lack of talent. We pay close attention to each detail; after all, we have a say in the matter. In fact, the next American Idol will no doubt draw more votes than the president himself. We choose who will be our next idol.

What is it about becoming a superstar that drives so many to take such an interest in the show? Is the winner living our dream? Do we all (perhaps secretly) desire to have millions of adoring fans that scream and shout at the mere site of their beloved idol? Do we all wish to stand in the spotlight of a sold out cavernous arena, as the music plays and confetti falls from the ceiling?
This psycho-analysis I’ll leave to the a psychologist. However, when it comes to idolizing a person let us look a little deeper, let us  seek honorable characteristics, altruistic motives and righteousness.

Each one of us has unique, G-d given talents which we should use for positive endeavors. G-d has created and each and every one of us with distinctive qualities, there for us to complete a specific mission within a communal goal. While we strive as a nation to make the world a better place, it is our individual missions which complete the task. However, our responsibility is not just to do good, but to influence others at the same time.

Each one of us should aspire to become a true American Idol. Instead of prancing about on a stage built on dreams of superstardom, we can improve our character and be an example for others. Each good deed that we do should be done with pride.

Let us look around at our friends and neighbors and learn from their positive deeds. When we notice people offering one another a helping hand, let us emulate their kindness. Those that brighten our world with decency and righteousness should be our idols.

When we value the G-dly and meaningful over the external and trivial, we not only learn from each and every individual, we can become role models to all those that surround us. Our children, siblings, friends and colleagues can look up to us as forces of good.

Fortunately, being a true American Idol is not limited to just one person a year. Each one of us has the potential of inspiring others. In fact, being a true idol ensures that others will be true idols too, in a chain that is truly limitless. Being an American Idol means a new star can be born each and every day.

So, are you the next American Idol?
